Summary:
Inspector Morse returns to solve the case of Valerie Taylor, who disappeared near Oxford two years earlier when she was seventeen. Everyone has presumed her to be dead, but then a letter to her parents arrives, announcing that she is all right and they are not to worry. Morse's investigation leads him to strip clubs, abortion clinics, and old boyfriends, but there is still no Valerie, dead or alive.
