Summary:
In 1861, nearly 100 people left Fyresdal in western Telemark for a promising but unknown future in the USA. Many of them settled in southern Minnesota, but some were not content. They wanted to travel on, the "Wild West." So they did in 1870. Would they find the promised land, fertile and free of rocks? Would they meet upon Indians? Would they survive the first winter? Would they be happy? Orabel Thortvedt, granddaughter of pioneer Olav G. Geitestad/Thortvedt, devoted much of her life exploring and depicting this story. She was a trained artist, loved animals and was inordinately interest in local history. This book portrays the work of a fascinating artist, while at the same time telling a touching family saga.
