Summary:
A fast-paced adventure set in the Canadian wilderness in 1787. Kate and her family have left their farm outside Albany, NY, to settle near Lake Ontario. The deaths of her mother and her grandmother have left the 12-year-old to do most of the chores and care for her four-year-old brothers. During the long, harsh winter, Kate's father is often away from the family's makeshift cabin to hunt for food. When he doesn't return from an excursion, Kate is forced to fend for herself and her siblings. The story flows swiftly, as the children encounter bears and wolves and struggle to survive.
