Monitoring of the launched girder bridge over the Iowa River on US 20.
Summary:
Environmental concerns were foremost in the Iowa Department of Transportation's planning for the U.S. 20 crossing of the Iowa River Valley in Hardin County, Iowa. This video documents the specific plant, animal and archaeological concerns; project history and development; bridge design; construction process; and lessons learned. Building the steel girder bridge adjacent to the river valley and rolling it out span by span over the valley was a very unusual and awe-inspiring endeavor. The award-wining bridge completed an important highway link across northern Iowa.
