Tam Lambert learns that her family is facing financial ruin and gives up her college plans to care for her four siblings and high-maintenance stepmother after her father flees, and the only thing that helps her through is her friendship with her new neighbor Shasta, but when Tam learns her father's actions will soon force Shasta and the other neighbors out of their homes, Tam fears she will have no one left to turn to.
