Summary:
Afrique sur Seine shows 1950s Paris from the cinematic perspective of a group of African immigrants. Une nation est née is a historical portrait of Senegal showing scenes from pre-colonial traditions, represented mainly by dance, to the exploitative European domination, to the new beginning represented by the celebration of the republic. Lamb is a documentary that captures the sport of traditional wrestling, called "lamb" in Wolof, popular in Senegal. Môl: A young fisherman dreams of motorizing his boat to better his working conditions. This dream becomes a reality, thanks to his courage and persistence. But his achievement creates a conflict between traditional values and the modern notion of progress. Birago Diop appears as the pioneer of African literature. While young Caribbean and African writers chose poetry to express their identity, Birago Diop has always been at the heart of the African literary world, adopting tales and novels as a means of expression. L'envers du decor captures Ousmane Sembene, one of the greatest African filmmakers, during the filming of Ceddo. L'envers du decor took four years to complete. As for Ceddo, it was banned by the Senghor government and remained so until 1983. Iba Ndiaye--the painter-- evokes the great moments of his life during an interview with the filmmaker--Paulin Vieyra. He first tells about his childhood in Senegal and his studies at the Lycéc Faidherbe in Saint-Louis, where he is already attracted by drawing and graphics. Then he left for France where he settled. Africa, however, remained his source of inspiration.
