Notes:
"Speaking subaltern is artist Jinane Abbadi's response, in words and images, to the Orientalist texts of various European authors written during the colonial occupation of Arab countries in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The multiplate chine collé etchings were printed by the artist. The English text was set in Baskerville and printed on Twinrocker handmade paper. The Arabic text was set in Diwani, recomposed by the artist, and printed on Kozo paper that was printed with Smegh. Smegh is a traditional water-based ink made in Morocco from a mixture of charred bull horn and earth pigment sifted to a fine consistency and mixed with water. The mixture is then left to dry until it hardens into usable form. All of the letterpress printing was done by Nelle Martin. Jenny Yoshida Park collaborated on the typography. Lisa Van Pelt bound the book and designed the enclosure. Speaking subaltern was published by Brighon Press, in a limited edition of 40 signed and numbered copies with four additional artists' proofs, in 2018."--Colophon.
