Lotteries date back to the early days of the republic and was the subject of a major case by Chief Justice John Marshall in Cohens v. Virginia (1821). It has become an even more important topic in the last decades, as 45 or so states have adopted lottery laws and there are national lotteries like Powerball and Mega Millions. The federal statutes that affect lotteries include those: under the criminal code; covering participation by national banks in lotteries; dealing with the role of the post office; and governing false representations.
