Seventeen-year-old Abigail, spending the summer with her family in Nags Head, North Carolina, agrees to teach her father's fishing guide, Benjamin Whimble, how to read and write, and as they begin to spend more time together, the two fall in love, only to find their relationship threatened by Benjamin's entanglement in Abbey's dad's Ku Klux Klan dealings.
