Summary:
Within the sinister corridors of the Capuchin monastery in Madrid, an abbot named Ambrosio has ascended to the peaks of spiritual development. But his near-saintly devotions are seeded too with self-satisfaction and an as-yet hidden capacity for evil. Seduced by a woman who entered the monastery disguised as a novice, Ambrosio suffers an epic fall from grace--one that places him in league with the Devil himself.
