Summary:
Iowa State College Landscape Architecture Professors Philip H. Elwood and Walter Popham took 4 students (Bethane Carpenter, John Hall, Max Bird, and Norman Morris) on a tour of Japan, China, the Philippine Islands, and Hawaii in 1929. This videodisc covers highlights of the Kamakura, Japan and Peking, China portions of that trip. Shown are a meeting with landscape architects Dr. Uyehara and Paul Tono, visits to the Great Daibutsu and the entrance to an ancient temple in Kamakura. In Nikko, highlights included a visit to the Great Tombs of the Shoguns, the entrance to the Nikko Temple, and cryptomeria overshadowing the Great Temple. Highlights of Peking include workers watering a street, a visit to the Forbidden CIty winter palace and a minor entrance. Includes a trip to Pei Hai, footage of the lotus in the Gulf of Tonkin, Chinese temples and Coal Hill. Additional footage in Peking shows private gardens of the Neatherlands Syndicate, the Llama Temple grounds, Temple of Confucius, Spirit Stairway, Hall of Classics, Porcelain Pagoda, Jade Fountain, and the Temple of Heaven.
