Summary:
A review of research literature was performed to identify the most satisfactory means of teaching oral anticoagulation therapy self-testing to the early postoperative cardiac surgical patient. Based on the review, and educational tool for self-testing instruction and a survey to assess the patient's satisfaction with the educational process was developed. Research literature suggests that quality of patient's overall care is reflected in patient satisfaction. Measuring patient satisfaction with this teaching process will assist in identifying areas where improvement is needed and areas where improvement is needed and areas that are meeting patients' needs. Malcolm Knowles' theory of adult learning provided the theoretical framework. The paucity of objective research data related to the postoperative cardiac surgical mechanical valve patient's satisfaction with the teaching process for self-testing of oral anticoagulation illustrates the need for further research, which will provide a basis for evidence-based practice.
