Summary:
French general, Armand de Montriveau, has recently returned from Africa, and meets a married woman at a society ball. She flirts with him, and soon he's captivated. His behavior is possessive and insistent. Then, it is her turn to become obsessed. Letters, balls, scandal, a kidnapping, and an ultimatum bring her to a cloister and him to melancholy.
