Summary:
The years from 1955 to 1965 are at the heart of the civil rights movement. In 1960, young people embraced nonviolent resistance as the Greensboro Four conducted a sit-in at a lunch counter in North Carolina, inspiring protests across the country. Ruby Bridges integrated an elementary school in New Orleans, but desegregation would bring its own problems throughout the South.
