Summary:
A significant number of Americans are presently affected by alcohol abuse or dependence, however these labels only reflect the end of the spectrum related to alcohol misuse and miss at-risk drinkers who fall in the middle of the continuum. Current literature suggests that primary care practitioners can influence a patient's level of alcohol consumption, especially in at-risk drinkers who are not dependent on alcohol. Unfortunately, screening for alcohol use is not routinely done by a large percentage of medical providers who take care of these patients. One screening tool may not always fit the needs of all individuals as other factors can influence sensitivity and specificity of the instrument. This research project focuses on developing a screening tool that can be utilized in an internal medicine office and evaluate unhealthy alcohol consumption in patients based on age, sex, medications, and current heath. The screening tool was created after a thorough review of available research, reviewed by professionals that work with alcohol problems, and tested on an anonymous volunteer patient population using a questionnaire format.
