In 1933, the Trutzes, a German family flees the Nazis for Moscow, where they meet the Gejms, a Russian family. Waldemar Gejm is a researcher on memory at the Lomonosov Institute, but both he and the senior Trutzes fall to the Soviet purges. Years later, the sons meet in reunited Germany, continuing their fathers' work.
