Summary:
Convened Aug. 12-22, 1993 in Hawaii, the Tribunal's purpose was to bring the United States and its subsidiary, the State of Hawaii, to trial for crimes committed against the indigenous Hawaiian people. The charges included genocide, ethnocide, the annexation of a sovereign people without their consent and the illegal appropriation of lands, water and natural resources.
Testimony was taken from witnesses on five islands. The panel consisted of jurists, scholars in constitutional and international law, human rights activists and indigenous law experts from around the world. A preliminary verdict called upon the U.S. and the world to recognize the inherent sovereignty of the indigenous people and for all lands to which the people feel they have a claim to be returned without delay.
