Notes:
Includes bibliographical references (pages 227-247) and index.
Summary:
The period 1760-1850 sees the emergence, then the decline, of a new subgenre: the eccentric travel narrative. These travels in a room, in my pockets, in zigzag ... play both with the narratological codes of the classic trip and with its setting in book, deploying paratextual and typographic extravagances that problematize the place of the book in a communication circuit increasingly dominated by the industrial paradigm. If Laurence Sterne, who launches this fashion with Tristram Shandy and the Sentimental Journey, claims his literary fame, for his imitators Xavier de Maistre and Rodolphe Töpffer it is a question of maintaining their auto-marginalization in an auctorial field more and more under the sign of the "industrial literature" (Sainte-Beuve).
