Featuring Naanii Mary Swanson, Willard Wilson, Geoff Greene, Margaret Edgars, Sphenia Jones, Dolly Garza, Maureen Lagroix, Barbara Wilson, Adolf Bitterlich, Gary P. Ross, and Roberta Olson.
Summary:
This film follows individual food harvesters in Haida Gwaii (formerly known as the Queen Charlottes) as they gather and prepare for the winter. The film celebrates the modern lifeways of a remote indigenous community and bears witness to a profound relationship between individuals and the land that sustains them. Facing the imminent extinction of the Haida language, Naanii Mary Swanson, a last speaker, frames this portrait of age-old traditions at risk. Detailed veiws of modern subsistence harvesting including cutting seawood fronds, catching and smoking salmon, and picking spruce tips are mixed with scenes of Naanii Mary Swanson sharing an ancient Haida tale.
