Summary:
"The play is set in the 12th century. It is several years since the Heiji Rebellion of 1159 when Yoshitomo, head of the Genji clan, failed in a coup d'état against Kiyomori, leader of the rival Heike. Having annihilated all but a handful of his enemies, and despite the vain efforts of the retired emperor Go-Shirakawa, it is now Kiyomori who holds the true reins of power. For any sympathisers of the Genji, these are very dangerous times, and they have either been forced into hiding or are obliged somehow to mask their true allegiance"--Leaflet.
