Summary:
"Central to the sculptural work of Hans Arp (1886-1966) was his intensive use of plaster. The material allowed the artist to apply techniques of both modelling and sculpting. He additionally took advantage of its qualities as a medium of reproduction. When his forms were finished, Arp had them cast in plaster. He then continued his work on these casts adding material or removing parts, sawing them apart or joining them together. Once he deemed a new sculpture valid, it was cast in plaster again. Out of the cyclical logic of this working method emerged a world of polymorphous forms which enthused a broad audience for modern art. This exhibition puts that world on show and makes the role of the material understood." -- page 6, preface
