20 leaves are printed, last 12 are blank. Leaf [2]r: The Gehenna Press has recently acquaired serveral founts of three sizes of the beautiful type designed by Jan Van Krimpen modelled on the handwritten [sic] in the papal chancery. This type has been employed in a series of exercises in which a maxim is embellished with alphabets and ornaments designed to show the felicity and subtle beauty of the face. A variety of colours are freely used; indeed, one page is printed in seven colours. The maxims and mottos are translated. Specimen of type designed by Jan van Krimpen. Leaf [17]r: One hundred copies printed at The Gehenna Press in March 1965, this is copy. Leaf [18]r shows initials GP around a small red medallion of grotesque and Baskin's signature in pencil. Leaf [20]v: One hundred copies have been printed on pre-World War two Amalfi which belonged to Bruce Rogers, & which he left unused at his death. The book measures five by six & one-half & is bound into decorative paper, made by hand by Peter Frank, the celebrated binder. Ten copies have an additional suite of the eleven typographic essays printed on a Japanese vellum and are bound by Arno Werner of Pittsfield. All copies are numbered and signed by the designer Leonard Baskins. Copies 1 though 10 are one hundred dollars. Copies 11 through 100 are twenty-five dollars. Orders may be sent to The Gehenna Press, Northampton Massachusetts or to the New York office of the Press, 929 Park Avenue, where copies may be examined. This copy is a binding mock-up produced by Arno Werner as an example for Leonard Baskin. It is unnumbered, and the printing and binding show imperfections that are atypical of Gehenna Press books such as uncentered type and slightly marred tooling on the covers. IaU
