Summary:
"Kind lives with both mother and father and two younger siblings in a rundown housing project at the rough end of town in Chicago. Every Sunday, Kind goes to church and sings in the worship choir. Everyone loves to hear her sing, but her Father never attends Sunday service. He believes in God, but not religion and he doesn't sing. He just spends most of his time shouting at her mother Valerie. At least Kind's neighbor, Elijah, always cheers her up. He's older and more experienced than Kind, and he always wants to make her laugh. At least he's less annoying than Kind's little brother Leo, who always seems to cause trouble wherevere he goes! When Kind's father leaves them in their mother's hands, money becomes even more scarce. Mother lives off welfare payments and the onlly concern is her new boyfriend. But Kind doesn't want to live like this forever. When a chance encounter offers her a way out of poverty--one that would mean Kind could have more money than she'd ever dreamed of--it also goes against everything she stands for as a Christian. Why does it seem that to serve God you must be poor? As Kind gets drawn into a world she knows is wrong, new temptations rear their ugly heads. Could it be that the devil gives out blessings too, or must every lie lead to ruin?"--Back cover.
