Summary:
Plastic is a collective term for synthetic materials, which have radically altered art and society in a short period of time. The exhibition 'Plastic World' is dedicated to what is today a central symbol and symptom of our mass society. It therefore opens up a broad panorama of the artistic use and assessment of plastic that reflects the respective social context: from the euphoria of pop culture in the 1960s to the futuristic influence of the space age and the trash works of Nouveau Realisme, architectural utopias, and experiments with material properties, to the ecocritical positions of recent years. With around 100 works, 'Plastic World' offers a true cosmos, and thus a hitherto unique and complex overview of the material history of synthetic substances in visual art from 1960 until today.
