Notes:
Issued in case. "Our edition is illustrated and illuminated by Peggy Gotthold following Mandeville's observations of strange flora and fauna and the remarkable beings he encountered; and especially of the wondrous and powerful kingdoms he chanced upon ... Our text is based mainly on the Cotton MS, a translation that was first edited in 1725 and continues to be a starting point for serious study of Sir John Mandeville. Though imperfect, it adheres very closely to the original ... We have supplemented Mandeville's narrative with five imaginative maps created for this edition. These are maps that would make sense to a fellow traveler of Mandeville's time ... "--Publisher's website. "The presswork was done by Lawrence G. Van Velzer. The paper for the text is handmade Chancery produced at the University of Iowa's Center for the Book under the direction of Timothy Barrett. The paper for the maps is handmade linen produced at Papeterie Saint-Armand in Montreal. The text is printed letterpress from polymer plates made at Richard Seibert Letterpress, Berkeley. The type is Silentium designed by Jovica Veljović. The initials are Cloister and Versatile. The illustrations were drawn and painted by Peggy Gotthold. Hand made Cave Paper was used to cover the books. All binding and the cloth-covered boxes were made at Foolscap Press"--Colophon.
