Summary:
With this long-awaited volume of the handbook of Greek literary history, pagan literature from the days of Augustus to late antiquity in the 5th and 6th centuries is comprehensively made accessible for the first time based on the current state of research. An introductory portrait of a period is followed by a large overview of poetry, philosophy, specialist literature, historiography, biography/autobiography, prose literature, fables and dramatic forms. As in the two present volumesof the Handbook of Greek Literature of Antiquity, the individual authors are classified in terms of literary history, the content of their works is reproduced and their transmission and reception history is presented. Of course, with a view to the poetic forms and the beautiful literature, literary questions are in the foreground. What is special, however, is that philosophical literature and the large area of specialist literature are also examined under the question of how the authors designed their writings in literary terms.--Provided by publisher.
