The successful mitigation of edge-rut issues for granular shoulders would increase safety and reduce the number of procedures currently required to maintain granular shoulders in Iowa. In addition, better performance of granular shoulders reduces the urgency to pave granular shoulders. Delaying or permanently avoiding paving shoulders where possible allows more flexibility in making investments in the road network. To stabilize shoulders and reduce the number of maintenance cycles necessary per season, one possible stabilizing agent--acidulated soybean oil soapstock--as investigated in this research. A pilot testing project was conducted for selected problematic shoulders in northern and northeastern Iowa. Soapstock was applied on granular shoulders and monitored during application and pre- and post-application. Application techniques were documented and the percentage of application success was calculated for each treated shoulder section. As a result of this research, it was concluded that soybean oil soapstock can be an effective stabilizer for granular shoulders under certain conditions. The researchers also developed draft specifications that could possibly be used to engage a contractor to perform the work using a maintenance-type construction contract. The documented application techniques from this project could be used as guidance for those who want to apply soapstock for stabilizing granular shoulders but might not be familiar with this technique. 516 $a Text file in PDF format. 538 $a System requirements: Adobe Acrobat Reader, Adobe Acrobat, or other PDF reader. 538 $a Mode of access: World Wide Web 513 $a Final Report 650 0 $a Roads $x Shoulders. 650 0 $a Roads $x Maintenance and repair. $z Iowa $x Maintenance and repair. 650 0 $a Roads $x Maintenance and repair. $x Maintenance and repair. 650 07 $a Granular materials $2 trt 650 07 $a Highway maintenance $2 trt 650 07 $a Road shoulders $2 trt 650 07 $a Ruts (Pavements) $2 trt 650 07 $a Soil stabilization $2 trt 650 07 $a Soybeans $2 trt 700 1 $a Guerra, Miguel Andres $e author $u Iowa State University 700 1 $a Jahren, Charles T. $e author $u Iowa State University 700 1 $a White, David J. $e author $u Iowa State University 710 2 $a Iowa State University. $b Institute for Transportation, $e performing body. 710 1 $a Iowa. $b Department of Transportation, $e sponsoring body. 710 1 $a Iowa. $b Highway Research Board, $e sponsoring body. 856 40 $a Iowa Publications Online $3 Online access. $z Full report $u http://publications.iowa.gov/id/eprint/18835 856 42 $a Iowa Publications Online $3 Online access. $z Tech transfer summary http://publications.iowa.gov/id/eprint/18835 856 40 $a Digital Repository @ Iowa State University $3 Online access. $z Full report $u http://lib.dr.iastate.edu/intrans_reports/96/ 856 42 $a Digital Repository @ Iowa State University $3 Online access. $z Tech Transfer summary $u http://lib.dr.iastate.edu/intrans_techtransfer/51/ 941 $a 1 952 $l IAOX771 $d 20240710103026.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=F2DDBC7AB7CA11EC864CB83724ECA4DB 994 $a C0 $b UIGInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
