It analyses the intersections of gender, class and religion by exploring the roles that middle-class, working-class and rural poor women played in the evolution of Irish Catholicism and thus the creation of modern Irish identities. The book demonstrates that in an age of Church growth and renewal, stretching from the aftermath of the Great Famine through the Free State years, lay women were essential to all aspects of Catholic devotional life, including both home-based religion and public rituals. It also reveals that women, by rejecting, negotiating and reworking Church dictates, complicated Church and clerical authority. Irish women and the creation of modern Catholicism re-evaluates the relationship between the institutional Church, the clergy and women, positioning lay Catholic women as central actors in the making of modern Ireland. 610 20 $a Catholic Church $z Ireland $x History. 610 27 $a Catholic Church. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00531720 650 0 $a Catholic women $z Ireland $x History. 650 0 $a Catholic women $x Religious life $z Ireland. 650 0 $a Catholic women $z Ireland $x Social conditions. 651 0 $a Ireland $x Religion. 651 0 $a Ireland $x History $y 1837-1901. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85068019 651 0 $a Ireland $x History $y 20th century. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85068021 651 0 $a Ireland $x Social conditions $y 19th century. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh96007741 651 0 $a Ireland $x Social conditions $y 20th century. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh96007743 650 7 $a Catholic women. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00849284 650 7 $a Catholic women $x Religious life. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00849289 650 7 $a Religion. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01093763 650 7 $a Social conditions. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01919811 651 7 $a Ireland. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01205427 648 7 $a 1800-1999 $2 fast 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 $i ebook version : $z 9781526136428 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20191211031202.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=CD67F2EE101A11EA8DA14E4D97128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
