There are other factors, such as legacy of the dictatorial regime, exclusionary policies, stateness problem, interference by regional powers, rentier economy and sectarianism, that have impeded democracy and contributed to its failure, but the employment of religion in politics was the most to blame. The establishment of stable democratic institutions continues to elude Iraq, 15 years after toppling the dictatorship. The post-2003 Iraq could not completely eradicate the long historical tradition of despotic governance due to deep-seated religious beliefs and tribal values, along with widening societal ethno-sectarian rifts which precluded the negotiation of firm and stable elite settlements and pacts across communal lines. The book examines how the fear by neighbouring countries of a region-wide domino effect of the Iraq democratization process caused them to adopt interventionist policies towards Iraq that helped to stunt the development of democracy. The lack of commitment by the initiator of democratic process, the United States, undermined the prospects of democratic consolidation. This is compounded by serious mistakes such as the Deba'athification and disbanding the Iraqi army and security apparatuses which caused a security vacuum the US forces were not able to fill. The Failure of Democracy in Iraq is a key resource for all students and academics interested in Democracy, Islam and Middle East Studies. 504 $a Includes bibliographical references and index. 505 0 $a Introduction -- Methodology -- Liberty and democracy -- Democratization -- Religion and politics -- Political Islam and democracy -- Use of religion for political purposes -- Sectarianism -- Lack of democratic tradition -- Political and administrative errors -- Exogenous factors -- Structural factors -- Conclusion. 650 0 $a Democratization $z Iraq $x History $y 21st century. 650 0 $a Democracy $z Iraq $x History $y 21st century. 651 0 $a Iraq $x Politics and government $y 2003- 650 0 $a Islam and politics $z Iraq. 650 0 $a Religion and politics $z Iraq. 651 0 $a Iraq $x Foreign relations $y 1991- 651 0 $a Iraq $x Foreign relations $z United States. 651 0 $a United States $x Foreign relations $z Iraq. 650 7 $a Democracy. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00890077 650 7 $a Democratization. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00890123 650 7 $a Diplomatic relations. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01907412 650 7 $a Islam and politics. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00979879 650 7 $a Politics and government. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01919741 650 7 $a Religion and politics. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01093842 651 7 $a Iraq. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01205757 651 7 $a United States. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204155 648 7 $a Since 1991 $2 fast 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 $i Online version: $a Alkifaey, Hamid, author. $t Failure of democracy in Iraq $d Milton Park, Abingdon, Oxon ; New York, NY : Routledge, 2019 $z 9780429442155 $w (DLC) 2018049145 830 0 $a Routledge studies in Middle Eastern democratization and government ; $v 25. 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20210721014106.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=EDF41B42B05F11EA86A2D96D97128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
