Despite their importance, there have only been limited attempts to understand agreements in a comparative context or to provide a theoretical framework for their study. This book addresses both of these deficiencies by comparing the use of agreements in six federations (Australia, Canada, Germany, South Africa, Switzerland and the United States) and considering why certain federations form more agreements than others. Parker analyzes the data using an institutional framework that considers the effects of seven variables, including the constitutional division of powers, the system of intergovernmental transfers, the size of the welfare state and the nature of governing institutions. In addition, the study provides the first ever comparative database of national intergovernmental agreements -- a new resource for future research. 504 $a Includes bibliographical references and index. 650 0 $a Federal government $v Case studies. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2009124185 650 0 $a Central-local government relations $v Case studies. 650 0 $a Intergovernmental cooperation $v Case studies. 650 0 $a Comparative government $v Case studies. 650 7 $a POLITICAL SCIENCE / General. $2 bisacsh 830 0 $a Routledge series in regional and federal studies ; $v 21. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2004141769 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20191210014634.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=C64CF630FB5411E7891C5F6197128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
