All five of her major paintings, accompanied by preparatory studies, are presented together for the first time. 520 $a Winifred Knights (1899-1947) is one of the outstanding, but until recently neglected, British women painters of the first half of the 20th century. Copiously illustrated in color throughout, this book provides the first full account of her life and work, examining KnightsÌ art in the context of interwar Modernism and assessing her contribution to the revival in this period of both Decorative Painting and religious imagery. Author Sacha Llewellyn traces the artistÌs career from her years at the Slade School of Art and her First World War evacuation to rural Worcestershire through to the time she spent at the British School at Rome in the early 1920s and the many commissions she completed between 1926 and 1939. Presenting the artist as the central protagonist, and with models selected from her inner circle, KnightsÌ paintings were deeply autobiographical. She consistently re-wrote fairy-tale and legend, Biblical narrative and Pagan mythology to explore womenÌs relationship to war, the natural world, working communities, marriage, motherhood and death. Drawing on previously unpublished documentary material, including letters, diaries, sketchbooks and photographs, Sacha Llewellyn makes a strong case for recognizing Knights as one of the most talented artists of her generation. The book reproduces all of KnightsÌ major works, including her masterpiece, The Deluge--Page 2 of jacket. 600 10 $a Knights, Winifred, $d 1899-1947 $x Criticism and interpretation. 600 10 $a Knights, Winifred, $d 1899-1947 $v Exhibitions. 600 10 $a Knights, Winifred, $d 1899-1947 $v Catalogues raisonnes. 650 0 $a Women artists $z England $v Biography. 700 12 $a Knights, Winifred, $d 1899-1947. $t Works. $k Selections. 710 2 $a Dulwich Picture Gallery, $e host institution. 941 $a 2 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231018015433.0 952 $l USUX851 $d 20170203030649.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=B6E306D6A18B11E6AED112AEDAD10320 994 $a C0 $b IWAInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
