Cities and towns in the south Indian state Tamil Nadu are consistently ornamented with huge billboards, murals and myriad posters featuring political leaders as well as movie stars. A selective part of these images is put up by their fan clubs. Tamil movie fans typically manifest themselves by putting up images of their star in public spaces and by generating a plethora of images in their homes. Gerritsen argues that these images are a crucial part of the everyday affective modes of engagement with family members and film stars but they are also symbolizing the political realm in which fans situate themselves. At the same time, Gerritsen shows how these image productions seem to concur with other visual regimes articulated in government restrictions, world class imaginaries and upper class moralities as presented on India's urban streets. 504 $a Includes bibliographical references (pages 241-252) and index. 505 0 $a Introduction -- Keeping in control -- Intimacy on display -- Vexed veneration : the politics of fandom -- Public intimacies and collective imaginaries -- Chennai beautiful -- Epilogue. 600 00 $a Rajin̲ikaÌnt, $d 1950- 600 07 $a Rajin̲ikaÌnt, $d 1950- $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00261042 650 0 $a Motion picture industry $x Social aspects $z India. 650 0 $a Motion picture audiences $z Tamil Nadu $z Tamil Nadu $x Psychology. 650 0 $a Fans (Persons) $z Tamil Nadu $z Tamil Nadu $x Psychology. 650 0 $a Families $z Tamil Nadu. $z Tamil Nadu. 650 7 $a Families. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01728849 650 7 $a Fans (Persons) $x Psychology. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00920678 650 7 $a Motion picture audiences $x Psychology. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01027120 650 7 $a Motion picture industry $x Social aspects. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01027186 651 7 $a India. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01210276 651 7 $a India $z Tamil Nadu. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01208735 776 08 $i Online version: $a Gerritsen, Roos. $t Intimate Visualities and the Politics of Fandom in India. $d Amsterdam : Amsterdam University Press, [2019] $w (OCoLC)1125115016 830 0 $a Asian visual cultures ; $v 5. 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20220317031135.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=A65A2C9CFFE911EBB6EAFDEE22ECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
