Knowing he could not defeat them in pitched battle, he led a small force--never more than 15,000 men--familiar with bush-fighting and the harsh environment, on raids into British territory. A gifted tactician, von Lettow-Vorbeck attacked only when odds were in his favor, then fought defensive withdrawals into the Colony, maintaining short lines of supply while drawing the enemy deeper into hostile territory. The British and their allies committed 160,000 troops in East Africa. He led them in a game of "catch me if you can," punishing them for every mistake. Promoted to major-general by the Kaiser in 1917, von Lettow-Vorbeck led the only undefeated German force to surrender to the Allies, well after the end of hostilities in Europe. This history follows what began as a campaign of conquest and devolved into a hunt for a single general and his small, loyal command"-- $c Provided by publisher. 600 10 $a Lettow-Vorbeck, Paul Emil von, $d 1870-1964. 650 0 $a World War, 1914-1918 $x Campaigns $z German East Africa. 650 0 $a World War, 1914-1918 $x Aerial operations, German. 610 10 $a Germany. $b Schutztruppen $b Schutztruppen 651 0 $a Germany $x Colonial forces. $x Colonial forces. 650 6 $a Guerre mondiale, 1914-1918 $0 (CaQQLa)000265382 $x Campagnes et batailles $0 (CaQQLa)201-0058194 $z Afrique-Orientale allemande. $0 (CaQQLa)000265382 650 7 $a HISTORY / Military / World War I. $2 bisacsh 600 17 $a Lettow-Vorbeck, Paul Emil von, $d 1870-1964 $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00076699 610 17 $a Germany. $b Schutztruppen $b Schutztruppen $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00792517 650 7 $a Armed Forces $x Colonial forces. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01351753 650 7 $a Military campaigns. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01710190 650 7 $a Military operations, Aerial $x German. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01710214 651 7 $a Africa $z German East Africa. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01713891 651 7 $a Germany. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01210272 648 7 $a 1914-1918 $2 fast 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20240619010705.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=4B59C3902E0111EFA856D47D28ECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
