The book explores, for the first time, Roosevelt's partnership with the Quaker leader Clarence Pickett in seeking to admit more refugees into the United States, and her relationship with Undersecretary of State Sumner Welles, who was sympathetic to the victims of Nazi persecution yet defended a visa process that failed both Jewish and non-Jewish refugees. After the war, as a member of the American delegation to the United Nations, Eleanor Roosevelt slowly came to the conclusion that the partition of Palestine was the only solution both for the Jews in the displaced persons camps in Europe, and for the conflict between the Arabs and the Jews. When Israel became a state, she became deeply involved in supporting the work of Youth Aliyah and Hadassah, its American sponsor, in bringing Jewish refugee children to Israel and training them to become productive citizens. Her devotion to Israel reflected some of her deepest beliefs about education, citizenship, and community building. Her excitement about Israel's accomplishments and her cultural biases, however, blinded her to the impact of Israel's founding on the Arabs. Visiting the new nation four times and advocating on Israel's behalf created a warm bond not only between her and the people of Israel, but between her and the American Jewish community. -- $c From dust jacket. 600 10 $a Roosevelt, Eleanor, $d 1884-1962. 650 0 $a Jews. 651 0 $a Israel. 600 17 $a Roosevelt, Eleanor, $d 1884-1962. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00047200 650 7 $a Jews. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00983135 651 7 $a Israel. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204236 600 17 $a Roosevelt, Eleanor, $d 1884-1962. $2 nli 650 7 $a Presidents' spouses $z United States $v Biography. $2 nli 650 7 $a Holocaust survivors $z United States $x History $y 20th century. $2 nli 651 7 $a Israel $x Foreign relations $z United States. $2 nli 651 7 $a United States $x Foreign relations $z Israel. $2 nli 651 7 $a United States $x History $x Government policy $x History $y 20th century. $2 nli 776 08 $i Electronic version: $a Sears, John F., 1941- $t Refuge must be given. $d West Lafayette, IN : Purdue University Press, [2021] $z 1612496598 $w (OCoLC)1203136675 941 $a 1 952 $l UQAX771 $d 20220601010832.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=27411010E17011EC82262A731FECA4DB 994 $a C0 $b JIDInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
