During this time, the collective memory of these events has been sanitized, reduced to a much-diluted version of what truly took place. Historical and sociological approaches cannot fully address the moral failure that allowed the atrocities of the Mao era to take place. Humanist approaches, such as literary criticism, have a central role to play in uncovering and making explicit the testimonies of both victims and perpetrators in "memory writing" in order to recover the truth of China's history. In this unprecedented study, memory work such as fiction, memoirs, autobiographies, and documentary films that have surfaced since Mao's death are examined to uncover the many aspects of the forces underlying remembering and forgetting. These are significant for they also embody the politics of writing and publishing traumatic historical memories in contemporary China and beyond. Beginning with a scar literature classic and ending with popular Cultural Revolution memoirs that appeared early in the twenty-first century, this study provides us with another important way through which memory studies can help us grapple with traumatic histories."-- $c Provided by publisher. 600 10 $a Mao, Zedong, $d 1893-1976. 600 17 $a Mao, Zedong, $d 1893-1976. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00028307 651 0 $a China $x History $y 1949-1976. 650 0 $a Nationalism and collective memory $z China. 651 0 $a China $x Social life and customs $y 1976-2002. 650 7 $a Manners and customs. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01007815 650 7 $a Nationalism and collective memory. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01744143 651 7 $a China. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01206073 648 7 $a 1949-2002 $2 fast 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 830 0 $a Cambria sinophone world series. 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20220317031921.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=E709336CB05F11EA86A2D96D97128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
