A usable past: thinking about contemporary practice in light of history. 520 $a "Disability and child welfare, together and apart, are major concerns in American society. Today, about 125,000 children in foster care are eligible and waiting for adoption, and many children wait more than two years to be adopted; children with disabilities wait even longer. Familial Fitness illustrates the historical dynamics of disability, adoption, and family. It explores disability and difference in the twentieth-century American family, particularly how notions and practices of adoption have (and haven't) accommodated disability, and how the language of risk enters into that complicated relationship. It reveals how the field of adoption moved from widely excluding children with disabilities in the early twentieth century to partially including them at its close. During and after World War II, adoption professionals determined that disabled children's fitness rested on whether agencies and adopters regarded these children as desirable for placement (instead of on any intrinsic undesirability), and whether a growing number of programs and policies to facilitate placement were effective. The book traces this historical process, highlighting forces that overlap with and impact this history. The book ultimately reveals that concerns about, and actions related to, disability invariably shape experiences of familial belonging, fitness, and worth, and, as the author argues, also reflect deep feelings of reticence and love"-- $c Provided by publisher. 650 0 $a Special needs adoption $z United States $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Adoption $z United States $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Children with disabilities $x Psychological testing $z United States. 650 0 $a Foster parents $z United States. 650 6 $a Adoption d'enfants à besoins particuliers $z Ãtats-Unis $x Histoire $y 20e siècle. 650 6 $a Adoption $z Ãtats-Unis $x Histoire $y 20e siècle. 650 6 $a Enfants handicapés $x Tests psychologiques $z Ãtats-Unis. 650 6 $a Familles d'accueil $z Ãtats-Unis. 650 7 $a Adoption. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00797076 650 7 $a Children with disabilities $x Psychological testing. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00855600 650 7 $a Foster parents. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00933230 650 7 $a Special needs adoption. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01128973 651 7 $a United States. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204155 648 7 $a 1900-1999 $2 fast 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 941 $a 1 952 $l UNUX074 $d 20221203065726.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=8772D4C872D911EDA0B05B7C49ECA4DB 994 $a Z0 $b NIUInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
