During the Battle of the Coral Sea, Swede flew an SBD Dauntless dive-bomber and helped sink Shoho, the first aircraft carrier lost by Japan in World War II. The next day, in that same Dauntless, he took off from USS Yorktown and out-flew and out-gunned three Japanese Zeros, making him the only dive bomber pilot to be awarded Navy Crosses for both bombing and aerial combat. During the Battle of Santa Cruz, Swede Vejtasa single-handedly downed an unprecedented two Japanese dive bombers and five torpedo bombers and saved the USS Enterprise."--Provided by publisher. 600 10 $a Vejtasa, Stanley W., $d 1914-2013. 610 20 $a Enterprise (Aircraft carrier : CV-6) 610 10 $a United States. $b Navy $x History $x History $y 20th century. 610 27 $a Enterprise (Aircraft carrier : CV-6) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00519943 610 17 $a United States. $b Navy. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00533204 611 27 $a World War (1939-1945) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01180924 650 0 $a World War, 1939-1945 $x Aerial operations, American. 650 0 $a World War, 1939-1945 $x Naval operations, American. 650 0 $a World War, 1939-1945 $z Pacific Area. 650 0 $a Fighter pilots $z United States $v Biography. 650 0 $a Dauntless (Dive bomber) $x History. 650 7 $a Armed Forces $x Aviation. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01351741 650 7 $a Dauntless (Dive bomber) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00888149 650 7 $a Fighter pilots. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00923988 650 7 $a Military operations, Aerial $x American. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01710199 650 7 $a Military operations, Naval $x American. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01710245 651 7 $a United States. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204155 648 7 $a 1900-1999 $2 fast 655 7 $a Biography. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01423686 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 $i Online version: $a Edwards, Ted, 1945- author. $t Seven at Santa Cruz $d Annapolis, Maryland : Naval Institute Press, [2018] $z 9781682472880 $w (DLC) 2018022390 941 $a 1 952 $l USUX851 $d 20180802013945.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=8EA42284961911E8A89F3E0097128E48 994 $a 92 $b IWAInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
