In adapting the concept of virtue to Republican ends, Robespierre was drawing on traditions associated with ancient Greece and Rome. But Republican tradition formed only one of many strands in debates concerning virtue in France and elsewhere in Europe, from 1680 to the Revolution. This collection focuses on moral-philosophical and classical-republican uses of 'virtue' in this period - one that is often associated with a 'crisis of the European mind'. It also considers in what ways debates concerning virtue involved gendered perspectives. The texts discussed are drawn from a range of genres, from plays and novels to treatises, memoirs, and libertine literature. They include texts by authors such as Diderot, Laclos, and Madame de StaeÌl, plus other, lesser-known texts that broaden the volume's perspective. Collectively, the contributors to the volume highlight the central importance of virtue for an understanding of an era in which, as Daniel Brewer argues in the closing chapter, 'the political could not be thought outside its moral dimension, and morality could not be separated from inevitable political consequences'. $c Publisher's description. 650 0 $a Literature, Modern $y 18th century $x History and criticism. 650 0 $a Virtue. 650 0 $a Virtue in literature. 650 0 $a Ethics $x History $y 18th century. 650 0 $a Civilization $y 18th century. 650 0 $a Enlightenment $z Europe. 650 6 $a LitteÌrature. $0 (CaQQLa)201-0003481 650 6 $a Vertus. $0 (CaQQLa)201-0010850 650 6 $a Vertus dans la litteÌrature. $0 (CaQQLa)000286189 650 6 $a Morale. $0 (CaQQLa)201-0016197 650 6 $a Civilisation $y 18e sieÌcle. $0 (CaQQLa)201-0036894 650 6 $a SieÌcle des LumieÌres. $0 (CaQQLa)201-0018002 650 7 $a Civilization. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00862898 650 7 $a Enlightenment. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00912527 650 7 $a Ethics. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00915833 650 7 $a Literature, Modern. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01000172 650 7 $a Virtue. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01167712 650 7 $a Virtue in literature. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01167722 651 7 $a Europe. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01245064 650 7 $0 (FrPBN)11996647 $a Vertus $0 (FrPBN)11996647 $x Dans la litteÌrature. $2 ram 650 7 $0 (FrPBN)11949368 $a LitteÌrature $y 17e sieÌcle. $2 ram 650 7 $0 (FrPBN)12072956 $a LitteÌrature $y 18e sieÌcle. $2 ram 650 7 $0 (FrPBN)11975687 $a Mouvement des LumieÌres $0 (FrPBN)11975687 $x Morale. $2 ram 648 7 $a 1700-1799 $2 fast 655 7 $a Criticism, interpretation, etc. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411635 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 700 1 $a Fowler, J.
