Its cultural presence in pre- to early modern Japanese society led to the publication of woodblock print series, such as the widely known landscape prints by Hiroshige, that took this famous road as their theme. The prints of Utagawa Kunisada, the most sought-after woodblock print designer of his day, represent a different treatment of the ToÌkaidoÌ, in which popular kabuki actors in specific roles are paired with ToÌkaidoÌ post stations. This study discusses the phenomenon of serialization in Japanese prints outlining its marketing mechanisms and concepts. It then proceeds to unravel Kunisada's pairings of post-stations and kabuki roles, which served as puzzles for his audience to decipher. Finally, this study analyses Kunisada's methods when he invented and developed these patterns. Kunisada's ToÌkaidoÌ is a valuable visual source for the print collector, illustrating over 700 prints."--Publisher's website. 600 10 $a Utagawa, Toyokuni, $d 1786-1865 $v Catalogs. 651 0 $a ToÌkaidoÌ (Japan) $v In art. 650 0 $a Color prints, Japanese $y Edo period, 1600-1868 $v Catalogs. 650 0 $a Ukiyoe $v Catalogs. 600 14 $a Utagawa, Toyokuni, $d 1786-1865. 600 17 $a Utagawa, Toyokuni, $d 1786-1865 $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00084865 650 7 $a Color prints, Japanese $x Edo period. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01710946 650 7 $a Ukiyoe. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01160404 651 7 $a Japan $z ToÌkaidoÌ. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01240201 600 17 $a Utagawa, Toyokuni, $d 1786-1865 $0 (DE-588)118725378 $2 gnd 650 7 $a Farbholzschnitt. $0 (DE-588)4016461-5 $2 gnd 650 7 $a Kabuki. $0 (DE-588)7642297-5 $2 gnd 650 7 $a Schauspieler. $0 (DE-588)4179440-0 $2 gnd 650 7 $a ToÌkaidoÌ. $0 (DE-588)7642021-8 $2 gnd 650 7 $a Ukiyo-e. $0 (DE-588)4186686-1 $2 gnd 648 7 $a 1600 - 1868 $2 fast 655 7 $a Art. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01423702 655 7 $a Catalogs. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01423692 856 42 $z Additional Information at Google Books $u http://books.google.com/books?isbn=9004191461 941 $a 1 952 $l SOAX911 $d 20151001050948.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=C5C1E25C680311E588D327A2DAD10320 994 $a C0 $b IOKInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
