The dominant theories of citizenship tend to recognize clear distinctions between citizens and aliens; either one has citizenship or one does not. This book shows that not all populations are fully included or expelled by a state; they can be suspended in limbo - residing in a territory for protracted periods without accruing citizenship rights. This in-depth case study of the United Arab Emirates uses new archival sources and extensive interviews to show how temporary residency be transformed into a permanent legal status. Temporary residency can informally become permanent through visa renewals and the postponement of naturalization cases. In the UAE, temporary residency was also codified into a formal citizenship status through the outsourcing of passports from the Union of Comoros, allowing elites to effectively re-classify minorities into foreign residents. 505 0 $a Limbo statuses and precarious citizenship -- Making the nation : citizens, 'guests' and ambiguous legal statuses -- Demographic growth, migrant policing, and naturalization as a 'national security' threat -- Permanently deportable : the formal and informal institutions of the kafala system -- 'Ta?al bachir' (come tomorrow) : the politics of waiting for identity papers -- Identity regularization and passport outsourcing : turning minorities into foreigners. 650 0 $a Citizenship $z United Arab Emirates. 650 0 $a Aliens $z United Arab Emirates. 650 0 $a Foreign workers $x Legal status, laws, etc. $z United Arab Emirates. 650 0 $a Emigration and immigration law $z United Arab Emirates. 651 0 $a United Arab Emirates $x Emigration and immigration. 650 7 $a Aliens. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00805278 650 7 $a Citizenship. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00861909 650 7 $a Emigration and immigration. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00908690 650 7 $a Emigration and immigration law. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00908736 650 7 $a Foreign workers $x Legal status, laws, etc. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01729243 651 7 $a United Arab Emirates. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01205954 650 7 $a Arbeitnehmer. $0 (DE-588)4002623-1 $2 gnd 650 7 $a Migration. $0 (DE-588)4120730-0 $2 gnd 650 7 $a Nationalismus. $0 (DE-588)4041300-7 $2 gnd 650 7 $a Staatenlosigkeit. $0 (DE-588)4182629-2 $2 gnd 650 7 $a StaatsangehoÂrigkeit. $0 (DE-588)4056630-4 $2 gnd 651 7 $a Golfstaaten. $0 (DE-588)4021571-4 $2 gnd 651 7 $a Vereinigte Arabische Emirate. $0 (DE-588)4062742-1 $2 gnd 776 08 $i Ebook version : $z 9781108586184 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231021014047.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=F24C6042083E11EABF3FA51A97128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
