These range from protection of the consumers and producers' interests against unfair competition practices, to territorial development, to preservation of cultural heritage and natural resources. Looking beyond formal legal protection for GIs, this book seeks to re-draw attention to what happens in the real world by exploring the opportunities and constraints which influence whether regional product branding initiatives are successful. It asks: what makes GIs work in practice and does the type of legal protection matter? To answer these questions, this book takes a comparative case-study approach and draws upon empirical data collected from twelve GI initiatives in two countries, France and Vietnam. In doing so, this book not only provides new perspectives to the ongoing international legal dispute over GIs. It also contributes to unpacking the factors that make GIs work in practice to bring about economic and non-economic benefits and ultimately support the empowerment of local producers. As such, this book provides new insights and will be of interest to legal academics and practitioners as well as food sociologists, economists, anthropologists and rural development experts"-- $c Provided by publisher. 650 0 $a Marks of origin $x Law and legislation. 650 0 $a Marks of origin $x Law and legislation $z France. 650 0 $a Marks of origin $x Law and legislation $z Vietnam. 650 0 $a Names, Geographical $x Law and legislation. 650 0 $a Trademarks $x Law and legislation. 650 0 $a Intellectual property. 650 0 $a Intellectual property (International law) 650 7 $a Intellectual property. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00975774 650 7 $a Intellectual property (International law) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00975795 650 7 $a Marks of origin $x Law and legislation. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01903849 650 7 $a Names, Geographical $x Law and legislation. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01032417 650 7 $a Trademarks $x Law and legislation. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01153903 651 7 $a France. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204289 651 7 $a Vietnam. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204778 776 08 $i Online version: $a Pick, Barbara $t Intellectual property and development $d Abingdon, Oxon [UK] ; New York, NY : Routledge, 2022 $z 9781003352105 $w (DLC) 2022030363 830 0 $a Routledge-Cavendish research in intellectual property. 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231017024742.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=04844BB2C48911EDAC2163E35EECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
