As the first phase of his Western Design, a large expedition sailed to the West Indies, under secret orders to take Spanish colonies. The English Conquest of Jamaica presents entrenched imperial fantasies confronting Caribbean realities. It captures the moment when the revolutionary English state first became a major player in the Atlantic arena. Although capturing Jamaica was supposed to be only the first step in Cromwell's scheme, even that relatively modest acquisition proved difficult. The English badly underestimated the myriad challenges they faced, starting with the unexpectedly fierce resistance offered by the Spanish and other residents who tenaciously defended their island. After sixteen long years Spain surrendered Jamaica and acceded to an English presence in the Americas in the 1670 Treaty of Madrid. But by then, other goals--including profit through commerce rather than further conquest--had superseded the vision behind the Western Design. Carla Gardina Pestana situates Cromwell's imperial project in the context of an emerging Atlantic empire as well as the religious strife and civil wars that defined seventeenth-century England. Though falling short of its goal, Cromwell's plan nevertheless reshaped England's Atlantic endeavors and the Caribbean region as a whole. Long before sugar and slaves made Jamaica Britain's most valuable colony, its acquisition sparked conflicts with other European powers, opened vast tropical spaces to exploitation by the purportedly industrious English, and altered England's engagement with the wider world.-- $c Provided by publisher. 504 $a Includes bibliographical references and index. 505 0 $a Preparation -- Expectations -- Hispaniola -- Failure -- Jamaica -- Imagining -- Surviving -- Conquering -- Settling. 600 10 $a Cromwell, Oliver, $d 1599-1658. 600 17 $a Cromwell, Oliver, $d 1599-1658. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00055660 651 0 $a Great Britain $x History $y Commonwealth and Protectorate, 1649-1660. 651 0 $a Great Britain $x Politics and government $y 1660-1688. 651 0 $a Great Britain $x Foreign relations $y 1603-1688. 651 0 $a Great Britain $x Colonies $z America. 651 0 $a Jamaica $x History $y To 1962. 651 0 $a Jamaica $x Colonization. 651 0 $a Great Britain $x Foreign relations $z Spain. 651 0 $a Spain $x Foreign relations $z Great Britain. 650 7 $a British colonies. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01910374 650 7 $a Colonization. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00868483 650 7 $a Diplomatic relations. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01907412 650 7 $a Politics and government. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01919741 651 7 $a America. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01239786 651 7 $a Great Britain. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204623 651 7 $a Jamaica. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01211575 651 7 $a Spain. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204303 648 7 $a To 1962 $2 fast 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 941 $a 2 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20191214022739.0 952 $l USUX851 $d 20170503024212.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=0F680CFC2FC611E7A3652FCCDAD10320 994 $a 92 $b IWAInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
