The Jesuits devoted themselves to preaching the word of God, administering the sacraments, and spreading the faith by missions in both Europe and newly discovered lands abroad. But, in 1773, under intense pressure from the monarchs of Europe, the papacy suppressed the Society of Jesus, an act that reverberated from Europe to the Americas and Southeast Asia. In this scholarly history, Dale Van Kley argues that Reform Catholicism, not a secular Enlightenment, provided the justification for Catholic kings to suppress a society instituted by the papacy. Spanning the years from the mid-sixteenth century to the onset of the French Revolution, and the Jesuit presence from China to Brazil, this is the only single volume in English to make coherent sense of the series of expulsions that add up to what was arguably the most important religious event in Europe of the time, resulting in the secularization of tens of thousands of Jesuits. 505 00 $g Afterword as fast-forward. $t The end of the Jesuits and the polarization of Catholic Europe, 1773-1791. -- $g One. $t From the Catholic Enlightenment to Reform Catholicism, 1540-1759 -- $g Two. $t The genesis and trajectory of anti-Jesuitism, 1554-1761. -- $g Part II. $t The expulsions and suppressions of the Jesuits: -- $g Three. $t The case of France, 1758-1764 -- $g Four. $t Portugal and Spain, 1754-1767 -- $g Five. $t Naples, Parma, and the Bourbon Family Pact, 1767-1773. -- $g Part III. $t Reform Catholicism and the ultramontanist international: -- $g Six. $t The end of the Jesuits and the polarization of Catholic Europe, 1773-1791. -- $g Afterword as fast-forward. 504 $a Includes bibliographical references and index. 610 20 $a Catholic Church $z Europe $x History $y 16th century. 610 20 $a Catholic Church $z Europe $x History $y 17th century. 610 20 $a Catholic Church $z Europe $x History $y 18th century. 610 20 $a Jesuits $z Europe $y 16th century. 610 20 $a Jesuits $z Europe $y 17th century. 610 20 $a Jesuits $z Europe $y 18th century. 610 27 $a Catholic Church. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00531720 610 27 $a Jesuits. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00532143 651 0 $a Europe $x Church history $y 16th century. 651 0 $a Europe $x Church history $y 17th century. 651 0 $a Europe $x Church history $y 18th century. 651 0 $a Europe $x Intellectual life $y 16th century. 651 0 $a Europe $x Intellectual life $y 17th century. 651 0 $a Europe $x Intellectual life $y 18th century. 650 0 $a Enlightenment $z Europe. 650 7 $a Enlightenment. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00912527 650 7 $a Intellectual life. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00975769 651 7 $a Europe. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01245064 648 7 $a 1500-1799 $2 fast 655 7 $a Church history. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411629 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20191214014558.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=7B903D18462211E9A3F20F6897128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
