These early resource-based concepts of power first emerged during the Industrial Revolution and were tightly bound to Western capitalist domination and the politics of industrialized work. As Daggett shows, thermodynamics was deployed as an imperial science to govern fossil fuel use, labor, and colonial expansion, in part through a hierarchical ordering of humans and nonhumans. By systematically excavating the historical connection between energy and work, Daggett argues that only by transforming the politics of work--most notably, the veneration of waged work--will we be able to confront the Anthropocene's energy problem. Substituting one source of energy for another will not ensure a habitable planet; rather, the concepts of energy and work themselves must be decoupled"---- Provided by publisher. 650 0 $a Power resources $x History. $x History. 650 0 $a Power resources $x History. $x History. 650 0 $a Energy consumption $x History. 650 0 $a Power resources $x History. 650 0 $a Energy consumption $x Environmental aspects. 650 0 $a Energy policy. 650 0 $a Energy industries. 776 08 $i Online version: $a Daggett, Cara New, 1980- $t Birth of energy. $d Durham : 2019 $z 9781478006329 $w (DLC) 2019980864 830 0 $a Elements (Duke University Press) 941 $a 1 952 $l USUX851 $d 20240403011636.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=99502B5EA55F11EAA027EF1497128E48 994 $a C0 $b IWAInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
