As chief objects of racism Jews and Blacks have been linked together for centuries, peoples apart from the general run of humanity. In medieval Europe Jews were often perceived as Blacks, and the conflation of Jews and Blacks continued throughout the period of the Enlightenment. With the discovery of a community of Black Jews in Loango in west Africa in 1777, and later of black Jews in India, the Middle East and other parts of Africa, the figure of the hybrid black Jew was thrust into the maelstrom of evolving theories about race hierarchies and taxonomies. The new hybrid played a particular role in the great battle between monogenists and polygenists as they sought to establish the unitary or disparate origins of humankind. From the mid-nineteenth century to the period of the Third Reich Jews and Blacks were increasingly conflated in a racist discourse which combined the two fundamental racial hatreds of the west. While Hitler considered Jews 'Negroid parasites', in Nazi Germany as in Fascist Italy, through texts, laws and cartoons, Jews and Blacks were combined in the figure of the Black/Jew, the mortal foe of the Aryan race"-- $c Provided by publisher. 650 0 $a Racism $x History. $x Christianity $x History. 650 0 $a Antisemitism $x History. 650 0 $a Jews $x History. 650 0 $a Black Hebrews $x History. 650 0 $a Blacks $x History. 650 0 $a African Americans $x History. 650 0 $a African American Jews $x History. 650 7 $a Black Hebrews. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00833625 650 7 $a African American Jews. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00798979 650 7 $a African Americans. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00799558 650 7 $a Antisemitism. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00810769 650 7 $a Blacks. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00833880 650 7 $a Jews. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00983135 650 7 $a Racism $x Christianity. $x Christianity. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01086636 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 $i Online version: $a Parfitt, Tudor, $t Hybrid hate $d New York, NY, United States of America : Oxford university press, 2020. $z 9780197529294 $w (DLC) 2020016026 941 $a 2 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20220526015307.0 952 $l UNUX074 $d 20210723014955.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=05C2E9109F4311EBBB7E29A634ECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
