The Constitution defines the structure and limits of the American system of government, and it organizes contemporary debates about policy and legal issues-debates that explicitly invoke the intentions and actions of those delegates to the Convention. Virtually all scholarship emphasizes the importance of compromise between key actors or factions at the Convention. In truth, the deep structure of voting at the Convention remains somewhat murky because the traditional stories are incomplete. There were three key factions at the Convention, not two. The alliance of the core reformers with the slave interests helped change representation and make a stronger national government. When it came time to create a strong executive, a group of small state delegates provided the crucial votes. Traditional accounts gloss over the complicated coalition politics that produced these important compromises, while this book shows the specific voting alignments. It is true that the delegates came with common purposes, but they were divided by both interests and ideas into three cross-cutting factions. There was no persistent dominant coalition of reformers or nationalists, rather there was a series of minority factions allying with one another on the major issues to fashion the compromise. Founding Factions helps us understanding the nature of shifting majorities and how they created the American government"-- $c Provided by publisher. 610 10 $a United States. $b Constitutional Convention $d (1787) 611 27 $a Constitutional Convention (United States : 1787) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01695393 650 0 $a Constitutional law $z United States. 650 0 $a Constitutional history $z United States. 650 7 $a Constitutional history. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00875777 650 7 $a Constitutional law. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00875797 651 7 $a United States. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204155 700 1 $a Treier, Shawn Andrew, $d 1973- $e author. 776 08 $i Online version: $a Pope, Jeremy Clayne, 1973- $t Founding factions $d Ann Arbor : University of Michigan Press, 2020 $z 9780472127320 $w (DLC) 2020029632 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20220526014107.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=0B44544671B711EB8A4F4B2E3BECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
