Er sichtete jahrelang Archive von Regionalzeitungen oder von Luftaufnahmen deutscher Eigenheime, um dann eine Auswahl dieser Fotos in Buch- und Ausstellungsform zu veröffentlichen. Tatsächlich haben diese oft anonymen Aufnahmen etwas Skurril-Humorvolles, Abgründiges gemeinsam. Für seine neue Serie 'Erscheinungen' fotografierte Piller mehr als drei Jahre lang auf Autobahnraststätten LKW-Rückseiten, immer mit Frauengestalten als Werbemotiven. Durch die Entfernung jeglicher Typografie laufen die Gesten und Posen der Damen allerdings ins Leere; es entstehen bedeutungsvolle, aber letztlich rätselhafte 'Erscheinungen'.
