It is a kind of drawing in space--a freehand, an intuition, a trust of materials. Rock of Eye, published on the occasion of Troy Montes-Michie's (born 1985) solo exhibition at the California African American Museum, is a collection of the artist's collages, drawings, and found and woven images sourced from vintage erotic magazines, French tailoring magazines, found photographs, and other materials. These materials are familiar from Montes-Michie's recent large-scale paintings and collages that center on the Black male body and his series that traces the social history and form of the zoot suit. Troy Montes-Michie was born in El Paso and his practice reflects his experience growing up along the US/Mexico border. This book is a study in ambiguity between portraiture and landscape; his are the cuts and folds of patterning and mapping. In Rock of Eye, Montes-Michie's stitches suture histories and geographies; they establish thresholds for crossing; his needle hits rock. 504 $a Includes bibliographical references. 600 10 $a Montes-Michie, Troy $v Exhibitions. 600 10 $a Montes-Michie, Troy $v Interviews. 650 0 $a Artists' books $v Specimens. 650 0 $a African American men in art $v Exhibitions. 650 0 $a Gay men in art $v Exhibitions. 650 0 $a Male nude in art $v Exhibitions. 650 7 $a ART / General. $2 bisacsh 655 7 $a Photomontages. $2 lcgft 700 1 $a Edwards, Brent Hayes, $e interviewer. 700 1 $a Andersson, Andrea, $e contributor. 700 1 $a Campt, Tina, $d 1964- $e contributor. 700 1 $a Shaw, Cameron, $e contributor. 710 2 $a California African-American Museum, $e host institution. 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231117022421.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=BE6F1DE0A5B811ECBC4A196C2DECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
