The vicissitudes of the Mideast conflict continue to dominate the international policy agenda, undeterred by the numerous failed attempts at reconciliation and the resulting entrenchment of the peace-adverse status quo. Despite the primary conceptualization of the conflict as a territorial dispute over borders and designated state territory, the interminable state of political confrontation and violence has had a profound effect on both Palestinian and Israeli-Jewish society. Palestinians and Israelis' worldview, past and present, has been affected by - and in turn influences - the ongoing dispute. This study is concerned with the usage of primary historical narratives as a means of group identity-formation and as a means of contextualizing and justifying political acts. In doing so, this book exposes the social taming of societies' pasts to become tales of empowerment which demonstrate the justness of today's cause and culminate in a rejection of the opponent's foundational narrative. The pasts inferred here are the Holocaust and the Nakba, which have turned into primary formative events among the two groups engaged in an intractable conflict"-- $c Provided by publisher. 650 0 $a Jewish-Arab relations. 650 0 $a Arab-Israeli conflict $x Historiography. 650 0 $a Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) $x Historiography. 650 0 $a Israel-Arab War, 1948-1949 $x Historiography. 650 0 $a Collective memory $z Israel. 650 0 $a Group identity $z Israel. 651 0 $a Israel $x Ethnic relations. 650 7 $a Arab-Israeli conflict $x Historiography. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00812225 650 7 $a Collective memory. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01739814 650 7 $a Ethnic relations. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00916005 650 7 $a Group identity. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00948442 650 7 $a Historiography. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00958221 650 7 $a Jewish-Arab relations. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00983106 651 7 $a Israel. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204236 648 7 $a 1939-1949 $2 fast 776 08 $i Online version: $a Wermenbol, Grace, 1990- $t Tale of two narratives $d Cambridge, United Kingdom ; New York, NY : Cambridge University Press, 2020 $z 9781108885430 $w (DLC) 2020037769 830 0 $a Cambridge Middle East studies ; $v 63. 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20220317021149.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=A5460704FFE911EBB6EAFDEE22ECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
