The first, the Beau roman, she offered to Claude, queen of France and wife of Francis I, and the second, the Rondeaux, to the king's mother, Louise of Savoy. With the pro-feminine spin of her rewritings, Anne developed the legacy of another woman writer from 100 years earlier, Christine de Pizan, by entering the on-going debate known as the querelle des femmes. Like Christine, Anne sought to redress the negative view of women found in much contemporary popular literature and to offer role models for both men and women at the court of Francis I. This book is the first detailed reconstruction and interpretation of Anne's library and her collecting practice, showing how they relate to her own writings and her literary milieu. It also teases out her links to other women writers of the time interested in the querelle, such as Catherine d'Amboise and Margaret of Navarre. Paying close attention to literary, manuscript, and artistic sources, it establishes Anne's reputation as one of the most erudite poets of the period, and one keenly attuned to the position of women in society as well as to the political sensitivities of the French court"--Back cover. 504 $a Includes bibliographical references (pages 317-342) and index. 505 00 $g Appendix C. $t Manuscripts containing works by Anne de Graville. $g Part 1. $t Anne de Graville : reader and collector. $t J'en garde un leal : reconstructing Anne de Graville's library ; $t 'A vos yeulx, un peu de recreation' : translation, translatio studii and self-fashioning in Anne de Graville's Chaldean histories ; $t The Rouen connection : the Puy, poetry and Petrarch -- $g Part 2. $t From reading to writing : Anne as author. $t Musas natura, lachrymas fortuna : Anne de Graville, Christine de Pizan and women's shaping of the querelle des femmes ; $t Love, Amazons and fortune in the Beau roman for Claude of France ; $t Debating with 'Maistre Allain' : Chartier, Blois and poetic form in the Rondeaux for Louise of Savoy -- $g Conclusion. $t 'Celle la qui porte le regnon' : a last word on Anne de Graville -- $g Appendix A. $t Books inherited, acquired, commissioned by or associated with Anne de Graville -- $g Appendix B. $t Inventory of the d'UrfeÌ library at La BaÌtie, c. 1780 -- $g Appendix C. $t Manuscripts containing works by Anne de Graville. 600 10 $a Graville, Anne de, $d approximately 1490-approximately 1543. 600 10 $a Graville, Anne de, $d approximately 1490-approximately 1543 $x Criticism and interpretation. 600 10 $a Graville, Anne de, $d approximately 1490-approximately 1543 $x Library. 600 17 $a Graville, Anne de, $d approximately 1490-approximately 1543 $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01965986 648 7 $a 1500-1599 $2 fast 650 0 $a Women authors, French $y 16th century. 650 0 $a Authors, French $y 16th century. 650 0 $a French literature $y 16th century $x History and criticism. 650 0 $a Feminism in literature. 650 7 $a Authors, French $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00822016 650 7 $a Feminism in literature $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00922752 650 7 $a French literature $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00934688 650 7 $a Intellectual life $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00975769 650 7 $a Libraries $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00997341 650 7 $a Women authors, French $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01177270 651 0 $a France $x Intellectual life $y 16th century. 651 7 $a France $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204289 655 7 $a Criticism, interpretation, etc. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411635 830 0 $a Gallica (Woodbridge (Suffolk, England)) ; $v v. 49. 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231219011927.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=6CB126C89E3C11EE84E191EF36ECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
